Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24 72, from Long Beach CA. DuVernay learned to love art through her grandmother Denise. Her aunt worked the night shift as nurse to ensure she could pursue her love for art literature and theater throughout the day. DuVernay instantly was captivated with an old 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay realized that art could be a powerful tool to promote activism. Her mother was also a the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay how to convey messages by means of artwork. DuVernay was a child with her family in Compton was a summer resident at Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historical Civil Rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay toured Selma in the summer months and was inspired to create a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she was awarded degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay started producing for the broadcast industry while she was still at college. She began her career working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to watch the home of one member of the jury and go through their garbage. Following her disappointment with journalism by the tasks she was assigned and deciding to go after a career in publicity. DuVernay started her first job as a publicist in small production studios right after she graduated from school. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. Besides PR, the agency created several lifestyle networks like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
